“Learn More About The Academy”
Nyasa International Academy was established in 1982. It is an international school based in Limbe, a suburban town of Blantyre. It consists of three component schools; the Montessori, the primary school – Nyasa Junior Academy, the secondary school – Nyasa International Senior Academy.
Â
The school is located in a quiet residential neighborhood, set on a large plot of land lined with fragrant, colourful frangipani trees. The current structure includes nine classrooms, a mini multi-sport area, a swimming pool, an ICT lab and interactive playground.
We strive to maintain an 8:1 student teacher ratio in order to provide close attention to each individual student.
Â
Â
How we began: NJA initially evolved out of Loth Lorien Montessori – Rubina Hajat’s brainchild and first foray into the vast realm of educational service provision in Malawi. With that foundation in place, Mrs Rubina Hajat along with a board of governors, decided to build a primary school incrementally – year by year.
The entire academy is like one big family and we strive to make children feel important and comfortable during the school day. Children are always referred to by their names and we make a point to celebrate every child’s birthday throughout the year.
Â
Â
Â
Unlike most schools following the UK Cambridge Curriculum, we teach two additional languages from reception; French and Chichewa. As children’s minds are most absorbent during their early years, we aim to encourage their lingual development at the early stages of their education. Languages get harder to learn throughout adulthood and by giving students the opportunity to learn two useful languages while they are young; we feel they are better equipped to deal with the global village our planet has become.
The emphasis on learning Chichewa stems from the patriotic attitude of the academy and the notion that a child in Malawi should know how to communicate fully with his/her peers. Our pride in our country is also reflected in our history and geography classes where children are taught both local and British topics.
Â
Â
Experience often cements learning and we ensure that students participate in an educational excursion once a term. Subjects such as ‘Farm Animals’ is followed by a trip to a working farm, allowing children to come into contact with the topics they have been studying all term. They have a tactile encounter with the animals which sometimes even includes the milking of cows and feeding of the smaller animals.
From a young age we introduce life skills and adult concepts to children in a way that they can grasp. Children engage with professional specialists, such as microbiologists and recycling experts, to understand the importance of respecting and conserving nature, while weekly information technology lessons in our newly revamped IT lab assist in preparing them for a technological world with ease and confidence. Lessons on how to behave, good manners and social morals are all enforced through various fun activities and educational media.
In the primary school, our school day begins at 7.10 am and ends at 12 noon for lower school or 12.30 pm for upper school, with a mid morning break. Children are encouraged to bring a healthy snack and we also have a tuck shop which sells wholesome, affordable snacks.
Â
Our core academic subjects, which include IT, are covered during the morning sessions and activities such as swimming, sports, music and art are also part of the busy morning.
On Monday afternoons the school offers a variety of clubs, where children can explore individual interests and develop hidden talents through activities such as cookery, fabric art or dance. For the sporty types, there is a swimming club and a football club too.
Â
The House System
Each child in the school belongs to a house. These are color-coded and named after animals that all share a common characteristic – to be swift and fast!
Teamwork is encouraged and the house spirit gives the children a sense of identity and motivation towards a mutual goal. Different sporting activities and various talents are tapped by setting up house competitions such as swimming galas, sports days, and art competitions.
The HOUSE CUP is awarded to the best house each year. This is based on the total house points earned throughout the year. House points are awarded for all kinds of effort and achievement, both in and out of the classroom. These are monitored weekly and the cumulative points for the term are announced each week in assembly.
Our parents have been very supportive in the growth of NIA. Fundraising events are organised every term providing a chance for family and friends to socialise. The money raised is used to improve the facilities of our school, including:
