Environmental Education

Our pupils are very aware of the importance of caring for the environment, the dangers of pollution and the negative impact of the destruction of forests and animal life.

All students are involved in a weekly environmental awareness exercise during which

  • They are introduced to environmental terms
  • They consider ways to reduce their ecological footprint
  • They create art using both natural and recycled materials
  • They discuss ways to decrease air and water pollution at an individual level

We have several ongoing projects and activities which are part of the school programme which reinforce environmental issues such as:

Recycling of Glass, Paper and Plastic: The school has an active recycling programme

Campaigning: The students of the upper school recently had a programme that involved informing the public about the importance of tree planting

Tree Planting: When a student celebrates his/her birthday at the Academy, they receive a ‘birthday tree’ to plant.  Most of which have been planted in Njamba Park

Harvesting Rainwater: We collect rain water for watering plants, cleaning and other activities in an attempt to reduce our reliance on the city’s already strained system

Arts & Craft: Classroom displays, art projects and even the costumes for our school plays are all created using reusable materials

Paper Making: Students recycle paper to make greetings cards and a variety of other crafts

Composting: All our bio-degradable waste is put in our compost pit

Turning Trash into Treasure: Making Treasured items from recycled waste
