NYASA INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY

WHO WE ARE:

Nyasa International Academic Development Ltd. (NIAD) based in Blantyre, Malawi, originally started off as a humble one room nursery school known as “Loth Lorien Nursery School”, in 1982 by Mrs. Rubina Hajat. She aspired towards creating a school that offered a warm, homely environment, which promoted curiosity and love of learning.

In 2005, a pre-primary class was started with the intention of gradual progression towards a full primary school and Nyasa Junior Academy thus came into being. Our main aim was to provide quality education at affordable rates for students from all walks of life.

NIA has since grown into a fully-fledged Primary School and Lower Secondary School, with a capacity of over 250 students offering international standard primary and secondary education that has been accredited by the Cambridge Examinations Body.

Below is a picture of the re furbished house where the new high school classes are conducted (left), and a preview of the new plans for the planned Nyasa International Senior Academy (right).

OUR VISION

To assist and empower under privileged and disadvantaged learners academically and in sports through provision of equal opportunities by providing financial assistance.

OUR AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:

To establish a platform for academic, sports and life skills developmental growth that is not discriminatory of background, ensuring every learner achieves full potential for a better society with solid values.

Over the years, the school has evolved with 2 new classroom blocks, a swimming pool and a state-of the-art Computer laboratory – all funded from personal resources augmented with profits ploughed back into the school and numerous fund-raising activities conducted by the Parent Teacher Association.

In addition, it is important to point out that the school is operating on a not-for-profit business model, whereby the proceeds generated by the school are used either for funding school projects or for the provision of bursaries for deserving students who could not otherwise have been able to afford the standard of education offered by schools such as ours. As such, it provides a valuable window of opportunity for talented students from less advantaged backgrounds, who aspire towards extricating themselves and their families from the rut of grinding poverty and deprivation.

WHAT MAKES US SPECIAL:

Academic Achievements:

Nyasa International Academy is proud to have achieved accreditation as an International Primary and Secondary school by the Cambridge Examinations Board. Our results have been impressive and we are proud to report that our pass rate is 100%

Our students receive a solid, individualised education, which encourages critical thinking and promotes the child’s individual talent. As a result, our graduates are confident, caring individuals who tend to flourish in any secondary school and university that they attend thereafter.

The children that come to Nyasa International Academy are from all walks of life who share a common thirst for knowledge and for giving back to their community.

Charity Projects and Community Support Provided by Nyasa International Academy NIA provides international standards of education at affordable rates for Malawians. We also have an impressive track record in charity work, community support and environmental activism.

Bursaries and Student Support

Since its inception in 2005, NIA has operated on a self-sustainable, non-profit basis wherein, a significant proportion of our student graduates have been on bursary support borne both by the school and by external contributors like Euro trust and Yusuf Abdul Ghani Trust.

*It is our firm intention to continue to offer bursary support for bright students from lower income families who would not otherwise have access to the level of academic excellence offered by our institution.

Scholarships

NIA offers financial support for deserving students who achieve very high academic grades and have creative talents to match.  These scholarships are awarded annually are funded by the Founder Mrs Rubina Hajat, hence the name Founders Scholarship.

To date, numerous students have benefited from this award. Many who joined the school on the scholarship have continued to win annually therefore enjoying the quality primary education and many parents have appreciated this opportunity.

These students have proved to be star performers in the secondary schools and universities that they’ve subsequently attended. Indeed, many have attained prestigious distinctions in their respective career trajectories.

Community Support and Service

In addition to offering International Montessori and Cambridge curricula, we also prepare our students for the challenges that life may have in store, by inculcating a strong code of morals, ethics and civic values mainstreamed into the very fabric of school life.

Presently we have an Early Act young Rotarian club comprising of students from the year 5 and 6 class. Students are guided to do community work where they identify a need and help the community by fund raising and assisting them with their needs.

The aim being to develop upstanding, well-grounded people who will be future assets to their communities on particular and to society in general.

Environmental Work

NIA has been instrumental in spreading environmental messages to our students as well as students of other schools and the public at large. Recent projects and initiatives include:

  1. Planting trees on the main highway between Blantyre and Limbe;
  2. Production of environmental books entitled: “The Man Who Planted the Tree” and “Chimmy the Chambo Has Three Wishes”;
  3. Planting the seeds of the fruits that we eat;
  4. Distribution of the fruit seedlings that were planted in-house to children on their birthday;
  5. Waste management and recycling projects;
  6. Concerts to teach fellow students about the environment;
  7. Term themes focusing on the environment;
  8. A “GREEN HORIZONS” committee, which aims to reach out to the local schools in the area with ideas on how to care for our immediate environment today for a ‘better tomorrow’; the logo for this was designed by the children themselves.

In 2011 Ibtisaam Hanif, at a mere 10 years old, was the youngest student ever to be selected to represent Malawi in the COP 17 summit held in Durban, South Africa. She competed with students from all over the country for this award.

Special request for the Bursary students studying at Nyasa International Academy….

We are currently supporting families whose children are on Bursaries.

However, with the current (COVID) situation and development plans taking most of the surplus funds, excess allocations for these students are no longer available. The school cannot afford to keep these students any longer unless they receive external funding. This year we have decided to hand over these students’ future to an independent Committee who would manage their financial support and yearly performance.

We therefore extend a special request to you to support a student. Help us to give to be able to deliver a holistic education to bright children, from a cross section of society, who would otherwise have limited hopes of attaining their true potential

It is a noble cause and well worth your participation. If you are interested in sponsoring a student or contributing towards a pool of funds that would be used to pay towards the education of the needy students
